Backup & Restore
A backup bundles your character cards, chat history, memories, and Storybook into a single file:
- Manual backup — One click in the launcher. Remember to do this before key moments like switching computers or reinstalling your system.
- Auto backup — KOA automatically creates a backup whenever it runs memory consolidation, giving you an extra safety net.
Restore: After reinstalling the launcher, import your backup file and everything comes back exactly as it was — characters, memories, chat history. They won't forget you.
Switching computers? Three steps:
- On the old computer, open Settings, click "Create Backup", and copy the .zip file to a USB drive or cloud storage
- Install KOA on the new computer, open Settings, click "Restore from Backup", select the .zip file, and restart
- Enter your activation code to reactivate (codes are device-bound and not included in backups; one code covers up to 3 devices)
The backup includes chat history, memories, character cards, Storybook, API config, phone data, game data, and more. A safety copy of existing data is saved automatically before restoring.
Using the Log Page
The launcher's "Logs" page shows real-time server output with category filters. If anything goes wrong (they stop responding, an error pops up), check here first — most issues spell out their cause right in the logs, such as an expired API key, exhausted quota, or network timeout.
Pair it with the troubleshooting table in the API Setup Guide, and you can resolve most problems on your own.
Diagnostic Feedback
For issues you can't solve yourself, use the diagnostic package to reach the developer: export it with one click on the Logs page. It automatically collects environment info, logs, and configuration, and redacts sensitive data — your API keys and other private details are masked and never exposed.
Once exported, you can send it directly to the developer with one click, feed it to an AI, or follow the channels listed in the Help Center to send it along with your feedback.
Automatic Updates
KOA updates take care of themselves:
- Launcher — When a new version is detected, you'll be prompted automatically. One click to install and you're up to date — no manual downloads needed.
- Game mods — On launch, KOA checks your installed mod versions and applies any available updates automatically.
You can also check for updates manually at the bottom of the "About" page. Every update's details are listed in the version changelog on that same page.
Where Your Data Lives
All data is stored locally on your own computer: character cards, chat history, memories, API keys — KOA never uploads any of it to a server. Conversation content only passes through the API provider you configure yourself.

Precisely because all data lives locally, backups are especially important.
