Memory System & "Our Story"

From the first rain in Stardew Valley to a late-night phone call — why do they remember all of it? This guide explains how memories form, get confirmed, and are maintained, so the story between you two only grows richer over time.

How Their Memory Works

Your companion's memory doesn't just pile up chat logs endlessly (that would be both expensive and chaotic). Instead, it stores information in layers, much like human memory — though you should still tidy it up yourself from time to time.

During each conversation, KOA organizes all sorts of details into "Our Story" — a multi-layered memory system that simulates how real people remember things. That's why they seem to "remember everything."

Where Memories Come From

Two paths, both automatic:

  • Built from your time together — After enough conversation and Offline Scene interactions, important details get distilled into lasting memories, while everyday small talk naturally fades.
  • Harvested from gameplay — Your in-game experiences (battles, gifts, adventures, hilarious accidents) are logged, and the moments worth keeping long-term are selected from them.

Game Memories: You Decide

Candidate memories picked from gameplay don't go straight into storage — you are the gatekeeper.

When you open the "Our Story" panel, if there are game memories awaiting confirmation, a confirmation window will appear, grouped by game world. You decide one by one: "Add to Story" to make it a shared memory, or dismiss it and let it go.

It's a good idea to clear the pending confirmation list every now and then — don't trust the LLM blindly.

Write Your Own Lore

In the "Our Story" panel, you can manually add and edit entries — no need to wait for things to happen naturally. Important lore can be written in directly:

  • Your shared worldbuilding (which city you live in, what cat you have)
  • Important facts they should know (your dietary restrictions, your biggest fear)
  • Stories that belong only to the two of you

World book entries imported from other platforms also appear here, so you can view and edit everything in one place.

Cross-World Memory

Games, Offline Scenes, and the Virtual Phone all share the same memory pool — and it works across games too: by the campfire in Don't Starve Together, they might bring up the house you built together in Minecraft.

One companion, many worlds, a single ever-growing shared memory and soul — that's exactly what KOA is built to give you.

Tips for Managing Memories

  • Memory entries can be edited and deleted — anything misremembered or unwanted can be corrected. Their memory is co-authored by both of you.
  • Memories are periodically auto-summarized and compressed to keep token usage in check, so you don't have to worry about costs climbing as you chat more.
  • Memories are tied to each character: every lover has their own independent memory, and switching characters won't cause any interference.
  • Worried about losing data? Data & Maintenance shows you how to back up with one click — memories and storybook entries are all included.
